The Mendocino County Art Association (MCAA) is proud to announce it’s second annual “Art in the Gardens” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. Timed to coincide with the peak of springtime blooms, this event combines tours of five glorious inland gardens with an opportunity to view original art in a wide variety of media, created by at least 17 talented local artists. There may even be opportunities to peek into the hosting artists’ studios to take a look at where the magic is created.
Various organizations in the Ukiah Valley have hosted open studio tours, garden tours and house tours in years past. “Art in the Gardens” is the love child of all three concepts, and was fabulously well attended in its inaugural year.
Cindy Lindgren, the event organizer, invites all to join MCAA to walk through our gardens of creative talent and imagination. “Visitors will enjoy both fragrance and beauty through garden gates and along pathways,” Cindy promises. “And it’s free!” she laughs.
Last year attendee Holly Laird gave an enthusiastic review of the experience. “I loved it,” she says. “Following the map was like going on a treasure hunt. It was great seeing how each different gardner took their environment and made it something special. The art was fabulous too. I’d highly recommend this… it’s a really entertaining way to spend an afternoon, and it’s fun to peek into peoples’ hidden back yards. That’s not something I usually get to do.”
Attendees can start at any house they wish, where they will receive a printed map of the whole tour if they need it. They can take as much time as they like at each venue, and visit them in any order they choose. Flyers with all the addresses for the gardens may also be picked up at the Corner Gallery, the Ukiah Conference Center and the Ukiah Library. There is no charge for the tour, though it is a good idea to bring a checkbook as all of the art on display will be for sale.
